Club
Event for May – Corvette Roulette – Las Vegas
A new Member’s perspective by Dori Lawrence
What can I say that
hasn’t already been said? I had a fabulous time in Las Vegas ! From the
great
company, to dressing up in jeans, bobby sox and a ponytail so I could
cut a rug with my new dance
partner Sue Rosen…and that was just Friday!
Saturday Reg and I participated in our first Rallye. Beginning in second
to last place, we ended up in
dead last, but were pleased to see what good partners we still are. Not
a cuss word was heard, even when
I missed every toss of the rings (due to the high winds of course!). I
can’t wait for the next one.
Sunday will stay in my memory forever. Due to the “gentle” prodding of
Cindy Orrico, I signed up for
my first Autocross, participating in the MTT portion of the day. All participants
were put to work on the
course. I ended up at the finish line, handing the drivers their times
on a post-it note. It got to be routine
after a while, until our dear Ed decided to mix it up a little. I had
positioned myself behind a concrete
light standard as instructed by Cindy. As Ed came across the finish line,
his car lost control…I saw
everything in slow motion. The man at the finish line took off on a dead
run, and I took two side steps
away from the light standard, just before Ed’s car hit the concrete block.
All I could think of was Ed and
his niece Shannon, and that beautiful car. Everyone was okay, I’m happy
to report, and Ed’s car can be
repaired.
That night, Jennifer Spencer and I dressed as Marilyn Monroe for the Awards
Dinner. When it came
time for the costume contest, we were encouraged to go out as a couple.
Little did we know that we
would be introduced as the “Lesbian Marilyns”! It was so much fun!
The Las Vegas Club outdid themselves, welcoming us and taking such care
with details of the entire
weekend. I’m grateful to them for setting a wonderful example of teamwork
and gracious friendship.

And
the perspective of Dori’s Husband, Reg Lawrence:
The Corvette Roulette
Rally was a blast. They say that it’s the people you invite that make
the party a
PARTY! Well, Corvette Super Sports was the spark plug that ignited this
bash. With a visit by not one
but two Marilyn Monroes and the King himself, who could ask for more!
Speaking
on behalf of Dori and myself we’d like to thank the Las Vegas club for
a wonderful weekend,
and a special thanks to all our club members who attended for making us
feel sooooo welcomed. It was a
weekend we’ll not soon forget.
Dori participated in her first MTT (I have no idea what it means…maybe,
Missed That Turn?) and had an
exciting first experience that has her revving for more. I think she’s
acquired an itch that needs to be
scratched. We also ran our first Poker/Gimmick Rally and finished last.
Thank goodness they weren’t
keeping time! And let it be noted, Dori is still talking to me and we
did take off second to last.
It all went by too fast.
And the perspective of the ever effervescent Cindy:
WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS – STAYS IN VEGAS? I DON’T THINK SO!
So much to tell….
Not enough paper!
Corvette
Roulette, 2009…… let the tales begin! First things first, bring cash with
you to the next
meeting in support of the “Cindy Lost her A.. and more” fund!
The Corvette Super Sports members that decided to go have a little fun
were, Joe & Cindy, Ed & Linda,
Bud & Dawnette, Chuck & Sue, Jennifer & Chris, Dori &
Reg and Larry Farrell. And of course…. That
was enough to give CCS Club Participation!! And a very special weekend
for Joe & Cindy is that
Cindy’s 80 year old mother flew up and then brother flew in from Spokane!
Very, very special for Joe &
Cindy!
We started gambling, well, I did, but I saw Jennifer, Chris, Dori &
Reg at the Alligator bar!! A Welcome
Party on Friday night, 50’s costume was optional. Great 50s food, like
chili dogs, mini burgers, and
bubble gum.
Saturday started off with the Car Shows: Wash & Show along with the
Concourse Show. Ed & Linda
Norris won 3rd I think not 1st in the Concourse, Chuck & Sue won 2nd
in the Wash & Show and Mr.
Chips, AKA, Joe and Cindy’s car took 3rd in Wash & Show. We forgot
our Q-Tips!
Around 4pm, we gathered to start the Gimmick Rally. Dawnette got to the
craps table and that was the
end of her! For Memorial Day weekend and the traffic that Las Vegas has,
they did an awesome job of
keeping us away from the Strip! It was only a 30 mile rallye, but lots
of fun games to play at each check
point, which included golf, fishing, ring toss and throw a ball into a
Budweiser box! One of the stops was
at the Liberace museum! We got to see lots of things from the 50s throughout
our route like the original
Wedding Chapel, and original high school. Joe & Cindy placed 3rd,
Chuck and Sue did well on a Poker
Hand.
Sunday morning was Autocrossing and the MTT autocross (Matching Times)
– now we’re talking! Dori,
being a clone of Cindy, informs me that she wasn’t going to do the autocrossing,
well, that started the
conversation…. Between the pressure from Cindy and Jennifer, Dori signed
up for the Matching Times
runs. First timer!!! I’m afraid that Dori’s husband Reg doesn’t like me
anymore since he said, “Thanks,
Cindy. I’ve lost her now to racing”! Forgive me Reg – the Car made me
do it!
Dori did great on her first time out, also coached by Jennifer, for whom
we know is not shy to the sport at
all any more! Practice, practice! In the meantime, Cindy’s mom had been
wanting “Helmet Hair” and
wanted to go in the car with Cindy. Well, she did….and LOVED it! Too funny
– mom is only about 5
feet tall, put her in the car and she can only see the dashboard! 2nd
Round she giggled, apparently 3rd time
I picked up the speed and she said she didn’t know I was going to “Drive
like a bat out of
Hell”……..After autocrossing, she was ready to go back to her room for
“Room Service”! Joe was able
to take my brother, who is now itching for a Z06…… Now as for showing
off, our very own dear Ed
Norris made a grand slide conclusion to the finish line which brought
him 1st Place!
Then we came to our Sunday night 50s Costume Party and Awards/Raffle Banquet.
Awesome food and
of course the people! There were a lot of greasy guys, goofy waitresses,
poodle skirts and Marilyn
Monroe twins!! Well, the pictures are worth at least 1,000 words!
Cindy’s brother Ned made a comment “That it is truly amazing that they
could get this many people
together from the same ASYLUM”! OK Corvette people are different we like
to have FUN! He did
confess that he has never seen such a great bunch of people and had the
time of his life.
They even presented my mom with a “Most Excited” award!! They have a place
in my heart!
